Clean your washer drain pump/hoses lately?

Ancient Maytag Neptune front loader. I got it for free about 6 years ago. Probably was 6 or 7 years old at the time. Fixed it with a new tub bearing for $50. Then 2 years ago had to put a motor and control board in it for $200.

Again this week it stopped working. The operator problem report stated that there was water standing in it and that it "wasn't working again". A quick look-see revealed that the tub was turning just fine (phew, not the motor) but that water was in fact standing. Took the back off and did my best to get the water out without it leaking all over the floor. removed the hoses and the two pumps (drain and accessory for the soap dispense) and a dozen coins fell out. They had shut off water flow to the pump! Took the opportunity to clean the whole mess, and the hose. 15 years of gunk.. ick. Put it all back together and appears to be fine. Cost = $0. Lesson = keep your hoses clean and your pockets empty!
