I was born in Massapequa, New York. My family moved to North Miami Beach, Florida in 1973. I attended several schools in south Florida, including John F. Kennedy Junior High School and North Miami Beach Senior High School in North Miami Beach Florida. I left NMBSH in 1979 to attend a session of the High School In Israel, Qlamaniyya, Israel, now known as the Alexander Muss Institute in Hod haSharon, Israel. I left NMBSH with a GED shortly after returning from Israel and spent a semester at Miami Dade Community College. Although academically successful, I longed for the road and left Florida in the Spring of 1981, just having turned 17, in a 1964 Volkswagen Van. I eventually finished a college degree at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
I was raised in the Jewish faith but rejected its concept of spirituality in my teens. Although of immeasurable importance to the development of the western mind I could not reconcile my understanding of Jewish law and spirituality with my post-enlightenment reason-based concepts of freedom and justice. I credit this realization, along with my long separation from any real Jewish community with my abandonment of Judaism. I did make Bar Mitzvah in North Miami Beach Florida as a token of respect to my maternal grandmother, Betty Kraus. Hence if I'm wrong about the god of of my mothers (Judaism is matrilineal) I hopefully stand a chance when all souls are called back. I married a Catholic. Our children are being raised with emphasis on their rational development.
My son Akiva is named after one of my Russian ancestors. Akiva also refers to the Jewish "freedom-fighter" Reb Akiva, spiritual leader of the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Romans, 132 a.d. The revolt was a dismal failure, sealed the schism between Judaism and Christianity and led to millenia of persecution of the Jews. I still like the name and Akiva is the smartest, most handsome boy on earth.
My daughter Emma Rose was named after her maternal grandmother and her Aunt. She is a virtuoso on the piano and the smartest, prettiest girl on earth.
My Great-Aunt Chibalaya and Great-Uncle Chaim Brody were brutally murdered in June 1941 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. The crime is loosely depicted in the movie The Bay Boy. A Glace Bay policeman, Arthur Frost, who rented a home from the Brodys and who was evicted the morning of the crime for failure to pay rent, was accused of the murders. The son of fellow policeman George Thomas was witness to the sounds of gunshots and the murderer's flight from the scene according to newspaper accounts. This photo of the Glace Bay police force from 1937 shows both Thomas and the accused murderer Frost.
I personally researched the event and Frost's indictment in the Glace Bay newspaper archives of the Sydney public library during the Spring of 2006. Arthur Frost got off on an insanity defense and it is assumed that he was committed. However, I have no information about what became of him. Family lore reports that the accused murderer got off due to anti-semitic politics of the time. However this theory is somewhat undermined by the extensive coverage of the murders and the positive portrayal of the elderly victims in the Glace Bay press. Local court records were destroyed in a fire in the 1950s(?).
Interesting side note, the newspaper coverage reports that during their life the victims donated land to the town of Glace Bay for a new street. The street was originally named "Brody Lane." Today the street sign reads "Brodie Lane" Apparently "Brodie" is a Scottish clan name and at some point the street was renamed to match the Scottish.
From a note to Patricia Brody's (Chaim's grandaughter) poem Chibalaya: "Chibalaya Cohn married Chaim Brody, 1894, Henry Street, then journeyed to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, a dying coal-mine town. She bore six children, raised a seventh, Molly, who was not her own. Using money from homegrown dairy products, she opened a women's/children's drygoods store. All the children worked in the store and the business thrived. In June, 1941 Chibalaya, 67, and Chaim, 77, were torture-murdered by a policeman to whom they rented a room. Although the officer was brought to trial for the murder, charges against him were soon dropped."
Chaim's son, Selwyn Brody (Patricia's father) was a famous psychiatrist in New York City. "Dr. Brody, whose career as a psycho-neurologist /psychoanalyst spanned over 67 years, pioneered the study of psychosomatic medicine where unexpressed grief and rage and jealousy are seen as prime causes of organic diseases such as asthma, lupus, and cancer." Dr. Brody, who died in 2004 at the age of 91, was also the victim of a violent crime in 1972, when he was stabbed in Harlem, NY on East 125th Street.
